Youth Programs

Youth are our future. They will become the workers and leaders who ensure that Oakland is an even greater place to work tomorrow than it is today. The Oakland Workforce Investment Board (WIB) is investing in our youth, because doing so will pay rich dividends now and in the future.

Youth Council

The Youth Council advises the WIB on the best ways to prepare Oakland youth for employment and life-long learning. The Youth Council also recommends program strategies and eligible providers for youth employment and training services. It's members, who are appointed by the Mayor and the WIB, include youth, parents, and representatives from youth service organizations, the private sector, education, organized labor, the juvenile justice system, and other groups.

Mayor’s Summer Jobs Program

Each year the WIB collaborates with our program partners and Office of the Mayor to coordinate the Mayor’s Summer Jobs Program (MSJP). Since 1968, the MSJP has provided work experience and personal enrichment to Oakland youth, ages 16-21. The MSJP helps up to 1,000 youth learn valuable job search skills, while securing summer employment and internships at local businesses for hundreds of our program participants. All youth who enter the program participate in pre-employment workshops to prepare them for success on the job. Many have been offered continued employment with satisfied companies. Please see the Mayor's Summer Jobs Program web page on this site for more information

Youth Employment and Training Programs

The WIB funds and supports a variety of programs that provide training, mentoring, and educational enrichment to Oakland youth ages 14 to 21. These programs are designed to help youth prepare for the world of work by gaining valuable skills, experience and confidence, and to become empowered in their pursuit of career, academic, and personal goals. Please see below for a list of our service providers.
